Psalm 130

1Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;

2O Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive

to my cry for mercy.

3If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins,

O Lord, who could stand?

4But with you there is forgiveness;

therefore you are feared.

5I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,

and in his word I put my hope.

6My soul waits for the Lord

more than watchmen wait for the morning,

7O Israel, put your hope in the Lord,

James 2:2-8

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does

James 4:7-10

7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Proverbs 8:32-36

32“Now then, my sons, listen to me;

blessed are those who keep my ways.

33Listen to my instruction and be wise;

do not ignore it.

watching daily at my doors,

waiting at my doorway.

35For whoever finds me finds life

and receives favor from the Lord.

Psalm 1:1-3, 6

1Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners

2But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

Psalm 69:13-18

Matthew 6:33

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Proverbs 3:21-26

21My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment,

do not let them out of your sight;

22they will be life for you,

an ornament to grace your neck.

23Then you will go on your way in safety,

and your foot will not stumble;

24when you lie down, you will not be afraid;

when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

25Have no fear of sudden disaster

or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,

Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Psalm 51:1-4, 10-12

1Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your unfailing love;

and cleanse me from my sin.

4Against you, you only, have I sinned

Psalm 103:1-5, 8-14

Psalm 115:1-2

Not for our sake, God, no, not for our sake, but for Your name's sake, show Your glory. Do it on account of Your merciful love, do it on account of Your faithful ways. Do it so none of the nations can say, "Where now, oh where is their God?"

Psalm 86:2-7, 16-17

Psalm 48:10

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 91:3-7

3Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare

and from the deadly pestilence.

4He will cover you with his feathers,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5You will not fear the terror of night,

6nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,

nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7A thousand may fall at your side,

Proverbs 31:10-31

10^c A wife of noble character who can find?

25She is clothed with strength and dignity;

she can laugh at the days to come.

26She speaks with wisdom,

and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

27She watches over the affairs of her household

and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28Her children arise and call her blessed;

her husband also, and he praises her:

29“Many women do noble things,

but you surpass them all.”

30Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;

but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

31Give her the reward she has earned,

and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Psalm 86:11-17

11Teach me your way, O Lord,

and I will walk in your truth;

give me an undivided heart,

that I may fear your name.

12I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;

I will glorify your name forever.

13For great is your love toward me;

you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.^a

14The arrogant are attacking me, O God;

a band of ruthless men seeks my life—

men without regard for you.

15But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,

slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

Joel 2:32

32And everyone who calls

on the name of the Lord will be saved;

Joel 2:25-27

25“I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten—

the great locust and the young locust,

the other locusts and the locust swarm^f—

my great army that I sent among you.

26You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,

and you will praise the name of the Lord your God,

who has worked wonders for you;

never again will my people be shamed.

Psalm 27:3

Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.

Lamentations 3:19-33

19I remember my affliction and my wandering,

the bitterness and the gall.

and my soul is downcast within me.

21Yet this I call to mind

and therefore I have hope:

22Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,

for his compassions never fail.

great is your faithfulness.

24I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;

therefore I will wait for him.”

25The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,

to the one who seeks him;

26it is good to wait quietly

for the salvation of the Lord.

27It is good for a man to bear the yoke

while he is young.

28Let him sit alone in silence,

for the Lord has laid it on him.

29Let him bury his face in the dust—

there may yet be hope.

30Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,

and let him be filled with disgrace.

31For men are not cast off

by the Lord forever.

32Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,

so great is his unfailing love.

33For he does not willingly bring affliction

or grief to the children of men.

Psalm 25:3

Indeed, none of those who wait for You will be ashamed; Those who deal treacherously without cause will be ashamed.

1 Corinthians 9:25

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

Deuteronomy 4:29

But from there you will search again for the LORD your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.

Psalm 46:1-2

1God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

Psalm 91:11

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways

Galatians 2:17

If we, the same people who are searching for God's approval in Christ, are still sinners, does that mean that Christ encourages us to sin? That's unthinkable!

Galatians 2:17-21

17“If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. 19For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!

Galatians 3:2-6, 9-12

^2-4Let me put this question to you: How did your new life begin? Was it by working your heads off to please God? Or was it by responding to God's Message to you? Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you weren't smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it? Did you go through this whole painful learning process for nothing? It is not yet a total loss, but it certainly will be if you keep this up!
 ^5-6Answer this question: Does the God who lavishly provides you with his own presence, his Holy Spirit, working things in your lives you could never do for yourselves, does he do these things because of your strenuous moral striving or because you trust him to do them in you? Don't these things happen among you just as they happened with Abraham? He believed God, and that act of belief was turned into a life that was right with God.
^9-10So those now who live by faith are blessed along with Abraham, who lived by faith—this is no new doctrine! And that means that anyone who tries to live by his own effort, independent of God, is doomed to failure. Scripture backs this up: "Utterly cursed is every person who fails to carry out every detail written in the Book of the law."
 ^11-12The obvious impossibility of carrying out such a moral program should make it plain that no one can sustain a relationship with God that way. The person who lives in right relationship with God does it by embracing what God arranges for him. Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you. Habakkuk had it right: "The person who believes God, is set right by God—and that's the real life." Rule-keeping does not naturally evolve into living by faith, but only perpetuates itself in more and more rule-keeping, a fact observed in Scripture: "The one who does these things [rule-keeping] continues to live by them."
